Olympics Sports Tokyo 2020
Something changes at the Summer Olympics every four years. It usually stays the same for the most part with a little tweak here and there, but a lot has changed between Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
In the context of equality between men and women, the IOC thought that a lot of joint components had to be added. A mixed team event in Archery, a 4x400m relay in athletics, a mixed 4x100 medley relay in swimming and an addition of the 1500m for the women and the 800m for the men to tie the swimming numbers. In fencing there was always a part that was not in the teams, but now there are teams of both saber and epee and foil in the men and the women. Judo also has a mixed event in which 3 ladies and 3 men each compete in judo. Table tennis now also has a mixed double and the triathlon now has a relay in which 2 men and 2 women alternate. The track racing now has the Madison torque, which I'm surprised they didn't mix it up right away. In weightlifting, all weight classes have changed and there is 1 less men's category
In addition, a number of sports are added to increase the attractiveness for the youth or because the sport is very popular in Japan. Karate and baseball/softball are examples of the latter and both sports are one-offs for the time being because we won't see them again in Paris in four years. However, in Paris we see 3x3 basketball, BMX freestyle, skateboarding (park and street), surf surfing on the short board and sport climbing with a competition on the parts speed, boldering and lead.
